The Written Image
The first pieces for this show were created using a wood-fire process in which flame and falling ash in the kiln's interior marks and alters the surface of the finished object. I designed saggers--protective containers in which pieces are fired--so that one side of the cup was protected while the kiln's atmosphere blasted the other. Placing text on opposite sides of pieces, I wanted some text to remain legible while other words were destroyed. Vision is cloaked, confidence is obliterated and trust vanishes. I see the atmosphere of the kiln as a metaphor of life; we are who we are as a result of the various environments in which we were formed. All pieces in this group are Wood fired porcelain and stoneware.
