Decorative AF
I think of AF being used unapologetically about something. I have referenced the “decorative arts” in my work consistently for nearly 40 years. At times firmly embracing the fields use of sumptuous materials and labor intensity. Other times referencing and questioning these objects. An early piece entitled “Luxury Item about Poverty” would illustrate the later.
In this body of work, all produced in 2021 with cone 5 porcelain, underglazes and glazes, I’ve returned to my love of obsessively rendered forms and surfaces. Recent events such as the pandemic, loss of loved ones, racial reconning, the most active hurricane season in 15 years and a bizarre days long collapse of the Texas power grid during a harsh winter storm has made me turn inward. Perhaps this work is escapist but going into my studio during these times and having some control seemed like balance in my life.
